2020 was a doozy, especially here in Melbourne where we experienced four months of very strict lockdown! It was also a time of great joy and change for James and I as we welcomed our beautiful baby girl, Nora, in to the world. After a small break, it is lovely to share some of the special projects I have been working on in some rare quiet moments in 2021.
My favourite highlights from The Owl and the Pussycat are now preserved on the album, available for download and streaming here. The children’s opera tickled audiences in south-east Queensland throughout the April school holidays. It sets sail again from 22 May – 13 June 2021 to coastal regional (Townsville, Bundaberg, Yeppoon, Gympie, Maryborough, Logan, Brisbane, Redlands) and again from 22 June – 17 July to NSW (Queanbeyan, Parramatta, Dubbo, Wyong, Sydney). Tune in on Thursday 22nd April 2021 at 7:00pm to ABC Classic FM to hear an interview and the whole album! My sincerest thanks to Vanessa Hughes and the Classic Drive team for the honour.
In January, I had the pleasure of collaborating on a new work for solo bass recorder with the incredible Alicia Crossley. Before You will feature on Alicia’s upcoming release, Bass Instincts. The album features seven new works by Australian composers: Anne Boyd, Jessica Wells, Holly Harrison, Alice Chance, Amanda Cole, Fiona Hill and myself recorded at Sydney’s City Recital Hall. A recording and concert tour is planned for August-September 2021. Album release details to come soon!
In February my arrangement for the Western Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO) of Tim Minchin’s beautiful song Apart Together was performed as part of the Perth Festival. Tim sold out his shows at Kings Park and Botanic Gardens and it felt very soul quenching to see photos of the crowds gathered together again after such a long time without live music.
In the thick of sleep deprivation, a chapter on my solo cello and tape work When We Speak was edited by three very wise and wonderfull colleagues: Linda Kouvaris, Natalie Williams and Maria Grenfell. This chapter will be included in an upcoming Palgrave-Macmillan publication on women in composition. It will also feature in my ongoing PhD. More details to come.
I’m currently working on a new work for flute and piano for my talented QLD based friends, Jonathan Henderson and Alex Ranieri, titled Heavenly Bodies. It’s fantastic to be working with both Jonathan and Alex again! I look forward to creating some special for them. This work will be premiered in Brisbane and Toowoomba 11 – 13 June 2021 as part of the Contra Concerts Series.
